Siaya county 2022: Why Raila may back Midiwo for senate

Former Gem MP and ODM chief Whip Jakoyo Midiwo is seemingly going to be at the helm of leadership in Siaya county come 2022.

The later who fell off Raila’s party in 2017 after losing party nomination to Elisha Odhiambo had since then been one of the party’s key critic in Nyanza.

After decamping the party, the vocal politician contested as indipendent candidate against Elisha but lost in a hotly contested elections bringing to end his three – term leadership.

Jakoyo would later campaign for former PAC chairman Engineer Nicholas Gumbo who run for Siaya county governor as indipendent candidate after losing party nomination to the incumbent Cornell Rasanga

The fierce battle which was later settled in Siaya law courts with Rasanga’s re-election being upheld left Midiwo with dim hope for political survival in a county that was largely dominated by the Chungwa party.

However, over the recent time, Otada as he is popularly identified by his supporters has turned out to be one of Raila’s trusted fighter.

On Sunday last week, ODM leader Raila Odinga in a meeting that brought together governors from Nyanza and Western tasked Jakoyo to lead BBI signature collection exercise in Luo Nyanza.

The meeting held at Ciala resort also reached a consensus to have Midiwo assisted by the Director of protocol at Kisumu county government Mr. Bob Madanje.

The two according to Mr. Odinga will also be in charge of sensitisation of rallies to ensure those living in Luo Nyanza are well informed about the report ahead of referendum.

It is without doubt that the two blood – related politicians have re – united and are seemingly working together ahead of 2022 elections.

Whereas ‘keen observers’ way high probability of Midiwo unseating the incumbent MP Elisha Odhiambo, the recent address by Midiwo has signaled impossibility of vying for Gem MP.

While addressing mourners during a burial in East Gem earlier last month, a meeting that brought together Mr. Elisha and former aspirant Booker Ngesa, the Vice chair Communist Party of Kenya who has over the time criticised Elisha’s leadership, Jakoyo confronted Mr. Ngesa in what he termed as ‘kidy game’ refering to Bookers politics in Gem.

Midiwo said that it was time for Elisha to deliver his promises to Gem constituents and that it would be something good to let him work instead of frequent attacks.

There’s likelihood of the former vocal law maker to make it to senate in the coming general elections.

Even though Midiwo has not publicly declared his interest for the said position, information from sources close to Midiwo hints of a possibility of him going for senate.

County representative negotiations yet to reach consensus

In a move to cool down political temperatures in Odinga’s backyard, a number of meetings have been held to discuss county representation.

According to sources, the battle for county governor has been the centre of discussion with Raila’s elder brother Oburu Odinga fronting former PAC chairman Engineer Nicholas Gumbo while a section of MPs including Alego Usonga, Samuel Atandi, Rarieda, Otiende Amolo and Gem Elisha Odhiambo fronting Siaya senator James Orengo.

Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi who has also been part of the discussion is reported to have agreed to step down for Gumbo.

The Public Accounts Chairman who has equally shown interest in the county’s top position was considering going for deputy governor position.

In the last meeting however, Wandayi was to go for senate in the event that the party settled on Gumbo for the governor position.

Midiwo’s entry to the race for senate will make it much more complicated since Dr. Oburu Odinga is reported to be going for the same position in the coming elections.

Tana River county director of communications Steve Juma and former West Alego MCA Peter Muhula are among potential candidates who have declared their interest in the senate position.
