Five Kenyan media celebrities who walked the hard path to their dreams. Number three will shock you.

Listening to their voices on your radio or sitting down to watch some of the most celebrated media
personalities, you may be conjectured by their present status that life was a walk in the park.

Just like motivational speakers put it; ‘Your present life doesn’t define your future.’

You will concur with such believe owing to the long and hard paths these great men and women went through.

With some facing rejection from biological parents, some walking from drugs abuse and some doing the least imaginable jobs to make ends meet.

1. Erick Nzoka – mortuary attendant to K24 news anchor.

One of the most feared jobs probably in Kenya might be this and I can bet this without any doubt owing to it’s condition. After all who wants to be in care of a corpse?

For Njoka, it was a family business. ” My dad trained me to be a mortician.” Njoka said in an interview with standard.

Though he did it whole heartedly, it was neither his dream job.

He had all his time wanted to be a journalist. “My dream was to become a journalist but my dad did not appreciate that career. He never saw any talent in that, he recounted.

2. Dan Mule – From a sweeper to NTV News anchor.

At a very young age he was forced to work as a sweeper at a government agency to settle a debt of Ksh. 1.8 milion left behind by his late dad.

” I was exemplary sweeper, and this was not lost on the supervisor who not only picked me consistently but for six months but also put me in charge of other sweepers and earned me a cool Ksh. 230 per day.” He told Nation

The second born in a family of three scored a B+ from Kabaa High school to manage an admission to Kenyatta university.

It was after his KCSE when his dad passed away.

The auctioneers came months after his dad’s burial with one aim – to auction their properties including their house.

Looking at their present status, he decided to stand with his widowed mother.

Dan then relocated to Nakuru where they had previously been residing before the family relocated to Machakos.

It’s from here that he walked from a number of companies within Nakuru industrial area.

He finally settled at National Cereals and Produce Board for a sweeper position

3. Johnson Mwakazi – From selling water to Citizen TV news anchor.

In an interview with The Standard in 2016 Mwakazi revealed how hard life was growing up without parents in the Kenya’s largest slum Kibera.

He had no choice but to take on menial jobs to earn a living.

Despite such hard life however, Mwakazi explained the most important life moral lessons that he believes even books couldn’t offer him.

” Pushing carts to carrying water for sales, to working at construction sites…. I learnt to survive and earn honourably. I later on graduated to selling hot pots and other housewares.” He said.

He however did not stayed in the job for quite a long time since that was not his dream.

He ventured into entertainment industry as his dream was all in arts.

Mwakazi would then move from stage actor to a short stint in film and later to Kenyan most prestigious media house Royal Media Services taking majorly on commercial adverts and news anchoring.

Mwakazi who doubled up as a life couch hasva great inspiring stories owing to not just is hard lived life but his dark life being mastarbation addict at a young age.

After quitting his job at Citizen TV he’s been a man worth copying especially by the current dot. com generations whose lives are being endangered by information sourced from media platforms especially on sexual activities.

4. Maina Kageni – From a fish distributer to a celebrated radio host.

One of the few lucky media personalities who pockets millions every month.

Maina, host of a popular Classic 105 morning show ‘Maina and King’ang’i’ is loved by many.

Thanks to his amazing broadcast voice and his intelligence in doing commercial adverts.

Maina led odd biography pages at a young age after being disowned by his biological mother after flying to UK for college but failed to do as her mum’s expectations were. Instead, Maina switched his purpose and begun working as a truck driver and a fish distributer for a Chinese firm.

5. Yvonne Okwara – From waitress to Citizen TV news anchor.

For a decade now, Ms. Okwara has been taking lead in media especially on interviews and news anchoring.

She’s indeed one of the most celebrated female news anchors in Kenya.

In 2018, Okwara disclosed her journey to his present life terming it as tough.

She worked as a waitress at Walkers Restaurant, Reinsurance plaza for a migour pay of Ksh. 150 per day.

She says she had to work till 10 p.m and would report on duty by 7 a.m .

She however learnt alot from the life at restaurant something that natured her to cope up with people of diverse status and culture.
