County Government of Siaya Commits to Ensure Safety of Fishermen days after horror boat accident

The County Government of Siaya is committed to ensuring safety of fishermen operating in beaches within the country.

According to the County Executive Committee member for Governance and Administration madam Dorothy Akinyi Owino, the county is working on budget to provide patrol boats and lifesaving jackets to the fishermen.

Addressing the public at Honge beach, after a successful retrieval of nine bodies of the Ugandans who perished in a horror boast accident on Tuesday, madam Dorothy said that fishermen’s safety is a top priority for the country government of Siaya.

She appealed to the Beach Management Units to have the records of those going in the lake at any given point.

As explained by madam Dorothy, having a register containing the names and the number of those in the lake for fishing activities will help during the times of disasters.

Madam Dorothy appreciated the management of Honge beach for their swift response to rescue the occupants of the Usenge-bond boat that capsized on Tuesday night.

The boast from Uganda, with 20 fishermen capsized on Tuesday night, due to bad weather. 10 people were rescued by the experts from Kenya Coast Guard working together with the management of Honge Beach.Unfortunately, 10 others lost their lives.

It is also alleged that the vessel was overloaded with other valuables, transported to Usenge beach from Uganda.Madam Dorothy asked the fishermen not to risk their lives by overloading their vessels when going in the lake.She asked them to be observant of winds and the rain that may complicate their activities in the Lake, leading to accidents.

In her visit to the beach on Friday 21 November 2020, she was accompanied by Mr Joseph Omondi, the Chief Officer in the ministry of Governance and Administration, Mr Oscar Wambiya, the County Director of Communications and some local leaders.

As a show of appreciation, madam Dorothy gifted the local fishermen and the Honge Beach Management Unit leaders who volunteered to join the operation gifts worth KSH 130 thousand from the County government of Siaya.

These included fuel, maize, milk, sugar, bar soap rice, gloves and surgical face masks and sanitizers.

Madam Dorothy reminded the residents of Siaya County to adhere to Covid-19 regulations set by the ministry of health.She advised that proper hand washing or sanitization, avoiding gatherings and maintaining social distance and rightly having face masks on are key weapons to fighting the virus.
